AN INTERESTING ROSTOV ENAMEL MOURNING ICON OF SAINT SERAPHIM OF SAROV, CIRCA 1833. The front of the oval enamel icon pendant depicting a waist-up image of Seraphim in an attitude of prayer with hands folded over his chest. He is identified by the inscription above his head as “Starets Seraphim” – literally “Elder Seraphim”, but in this case the term Starets (Elder) has the connotation of a spiritually advanced advisor and counselor. The verso inscribed in Slavonic, The Elder Father Seraphim . Contained in a brass frame with beaded interior border and with integral suspension loop at top attached to original black velvet mourning ribbon.

Saint Seraphim of Sarov (1759-1833) became one of the most renowned saints to emerge from 19th century Russia. At the age of 66 he began his career as a spiritual elder (Russian Satrets). Emerging from his trial of prayer and vigil, he turned to the suffering world as a healer, visionary and spiritual master of unusual vigor and radiance. People from far and wide came to seek his guidance, most notable among them was Nikolay Motovilov (1809-1879) a nobleman who became an ardent follower and eventually his biographer. Hundreds of pilgrims per day visited him, drawn by his ability to answer his guests' questions before they could ask. One of the most well-known bits of advice he gave those who sought him was, "Acquire a peaceful spirit, and around you thousands will be saved." Due in large part to the insistence of Empress Alexandra Feodorovna, on July 19, 1903 Seraphim was glorified (canonized). On the day of Seraphim’s canonization, Nicholas II and other Sovereigns carried the coffin containing his relics to its resting-place. Saint Seraphim was revered by the Royal Family, and it is known that in the office of Nicholas II hung an icon portraying the beloved saint as well as in the bedroom of the Empress and those of her children.
