A LARGE AND IMPRESSIVE RUSSIAN ICON OF THE TIKHVIN MOTHER OF GOD, DATED 1774. Finely rendered in the “Old Style”, the upper left and right corners display the abbreviated Greek title MP OY (Meter Theou). She bears a star upon each shoulder and on her head, signifying her perpetual virginity before, during and after the birth of Christ. Above the head of Christ the Greek abbreviated title ICXC - ISUS KHRISTOS. And the head of Christ encircled with the distinctive cross-halo inscribed with the Greek words HO ON, meaning "Who Is", as found in Revelation 1:8. The lower margin inscribed in Slavonic, "Image of the Most Holy Mother of God in the precise measure and likeness of her wonderworking image Tikhvinskaya; painted in the year 7282" (1774). A large and imposing icon, 35 inches x 26 inches (89 x 66 cm).

The original "Tikhvin" Mother of God icon was believed to have been painted by St. Luke who sent it as a gift to the ruler Theophilus at Antioch. After Theophilus' death it went to Jerusalem. In the 5th century, it was sent as a gift to Pulcheria, sister of Theodosius the Younger, in Constantinople. The church of the Blachernae was built to house it, and it remained there for over five hundred years under the title Hodigitria-Greek for guide or “Way-Shower”- meaning that Mary gestures the ‘way’ to salvation, her son. In 1383, knowing of the approaching fall of Constantinople to the Turks, the icon left that city for Russia. Legend has it that fishermen saw it in a circle of light over Lake Ladoga, and then it appeared again near Lake Onega, then on the Oyat River, and then twice more, moving even closer to the village of Tikhvin. Finally it appeared on the bank of the Tikhvinka River in 1383, during the reign of Dmitriy Donskoy. The icon was placed in a wooden church which then burned in 1390, but the icon was found unharmed in the juniper bush. In 1395 it survived another fire, and in 1500 yet another. In the 6th century it was placed in a brick church dedicated to the Dormition, and in 1613, after the vision of a blind widow, it was used to repel the Swedes by being carried in a procession, following the instructions given by the Mother of God. The Tikhvin icon is also considered the Patroness and protector of families.
