A VERY FINE RUSSIAN GILDED SILVER GEM SET AND SHADED ENAMEL EASTER EGG, FEDOR RÜCKERT, MOSCOW, 1908-1917. Profusely enameled with geometric and floral ornaments in the Pan Slavic style in various shades against a mint green ground and with applied decorative filigree wires, and set with tiger eye and amethyst cabochons. The interior brightly gilded, hallmarked Moscow, circa 1908-1917, Cyrillic maker’s mark “FR” and 88 silver standard. Height 2.75 inches (7 cm).

Of all the Russian artisans working in cloisonné and shaded enamel at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century, no work is more revered than that produced in the workshop of Fedor Ivanovich Rückert. So highly esteemed was his creative genius that all the major competing firms in Russia would eventually line up to purchase his wares including the House of Faberge who in 1887 contracted with him to purchase the majority of all his output. Ironically, until recently little was known about the master jeweler whose works epitomized the New Russian style as expressed in a totally unique flair rendered in a cacophony of colored enameled objects d’virtue.

Fedor Ivanovich Rückert (Friedrich Mauritz Rückert) was born in 1840 in Alsace-Lorraine. According to the family, he was brought to Russia from France at the age of fourteen – either by Prince Yusupov or by Golitsyn. By the age of 26, in the year 1886, he is recorded as having his own workshop in Moscow which produced enameled silver objects expressing the Neo Slavic taste in a manner never before seen. So popular were his works that the following year (1887), the Moscow branch of Faberge signed a contract with Rückert and according to some sources up to 80% of his output at that time was retailed by Faberge.

From 1910-1917 Rückert, along with four of his children and numerous other craftsmen, worked independently at his studio located on Vorontsovskaya Street. It was at this time that Rückert began accepting orders from competing firms of Faberge such as Ovchinnikov, Kurlyukov and Marshak. Upon his death in 1917, his workshop soon closed. Today, collectors the world over still actively pursue his highly prized works which so uniquely captured the pinnacle of the Pan Slavic taste as rendered in enamel on silver.
