A VERY FINE AND INTERESTING RUSSIAN ICON OF THE CRUCIFIXION, 19TH CENTURY. The icon finely painted on a gold-leafed ground. At center, an inset painted wood cross depicting the crucified Christ and at top God the Father and between them a dove symbolizing the Holy Spirit. Above the central crossbeam angels of the Lord ascend and beneath angels catch the blood of Christ in chalices. In the left foreground the three Mary’s and in the right foreground the Apostle Saint John and the Roman Centurion Longinus. Behind the Three Mary’s is the "Good Thief” identified by an inscription which reads, “The wise thief dwells in Paradise” and behind St. John and Longinus the “Bad Thief” with corresponding inscription which reads, “The hanged malefactor descends to Hades". The borders finely painted with selected saints, on the left side the Guardian Angel, St. Nicholas, and the Monastic Saint Serapion. On the right border, the Apostle St. Peter, the Bishop St. Leo, and St. Stratonik. Additionally at the base of the cross on the painted surface is painted an inscription which reads “Restored in 7391” (1883).Both the entire icon and the inset cross overlaid with a silver-gilt, repoussé and chased riza, both hallmarked Moscow, dated 1819 and with Cyrillic maker's mark PA and 84 silver standard. The upper corners with enameled title plaques identifying the subject as “The Crucifixion of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” 14.1 inches x 11.8 inches (36 x 30 cm).
The offered icon is a fine example of how icons were often used as receptacles for family heirlooms in the form, most often of crosses, as in this example. The inscription dated 1883 indicating the year of restoration most likely refers to the cross being re-set.
