Zweite Ausgabe. - Exceptionally large colorplate-book on the traditions and customs in the city of Rome at the beginning of the 19th century and at the same time an important testimony for cultural history in general. Illustrated by 72 magnificent full page lithographs all originally colored by hand. The artist portrayed the inhabitants and their daily life in the city, from Pope to pauper, from the many religious processions and rites to the various entertainments such as horse races, bull fighting and ball games. Rather than Roman sculptures and the remains of old temples, Thomas drew in great detail the things he saw in the city during his stay at the villa Medici from November 1816 to December 1818. Beggars, pilgrims, undertakers, merchants, missionaries. His work was lithographed by François le Villain in Paris and finely handcolored. The 44 p. of text are the author's descriptions accompanying the plates. - 3 Textbl. und 17 Taf. mit Wurmsp. im w.Rd., etwas stockfleckig (Text stärker). In a fine, recent, red half-morocco binding with corners, spine gilt. In all a fine copy.
