Magnificent centrepiece made of pineapple onyx and bronze gilded with mercury. Signed "Ste. des Onyx. 24, Bv. Italiens" and numbered 2267.
A large onyx cup, on a gilded bronze stem attached to the base. Around it are three chubby children who seem to be playing catch, their clothing clings to their bodies as if it is moving in the wind and this is why they are holding on to the edge. An elaborate garland covers the surface forming waves, and three cartouches decorated with shells and plant motifs complete the exquisite and delicate decoration.
This is made by one of the most important manufacturers of French onyx which came from the quarries of Algeria. Founded under the name of "Alphonse Pallu & Cie" in Paris on the 14th June 1858, by Alphonse Pallu, Henri Journet became the next manager, and the company changed its name to "H. Journet &Cie." During this period the artist, draftsman and Jules Walter, was the artistic director and Emile Honorez was the foreman, in charge of the stone work.
