Ormolu bronze mantle clock. Signed on the face. Liefse, Montesquieu 8, Paris. From around 1800-1815.
"New time leads to old time." Magnificent clock. There is an almost identical example in the Royal Palace Collection in Madrid, which has not been signed. Listed among the property of King Charles IV´s brother, Prince Antonio Pascual of Spain on the 18th June 1817, where it is valued at 3,000 reals, it was then inherited by King Ferdinand VII. On both clocks an old man, representing the past, holds an hourglass, symbol of passing time, whilst in the other hand he holds a scythe, as death approaches. The other figure, a child, is rowing and already steering the ship. Between the two of them a cube houses the dial and the movement. The ship is adorned with two swan heads and rests on two crocodile heads. The plinth has bevelled corners decorated with scallop shells. Bass relief with trident, batons and oars. Claw feet.
