Saint Augustine of Hippo as a Bishop
Oil on panel. 174 x 61 cm.
The fact that here the bishop saint and church father Augustine of Hippo is depicted alone, as well as the size of the panel both point to an origin in a larger context. The work probably once formed part of an altarpiece and was possibly the wing of a hinged polyptych. The banderole with the text "HINC PASCOR AB VBERE/HINC PASCOR EX VLNERE" is based on one of Saint Augustine's aphorisms and translates loosely to "here I was nourished from the breast, here I was revived by the wound".

Die isolierte Darstellung des heiligen Bischofs und Kirchenlehrers Augustinus sowie die Maße des Bildträgers lassen auf einen größeren Kontext schließen. Höchstwahrscheinlich war das Tafelbild einst ein Element eines Altars, vermutlich eine Seite eines Altarflügels. Das Spruchband mit dem Schriftzug "HINC PASCOR AB VBERE / HINC PASCOR EX VLNERE" ist eine Anlehnung an den Sinnspruch des Heiligen Augustinus: "Hier werde ich von der Brust genährt, hier werde ich aus der Wunde erquickt."
