Probably the collection of the Counts of Canossa. - Collection of Jamies Reddie Anderson, Keswick, 1872. - Auctioned by Sotheby´s, London, 14.4.1948, lot 122. - Private collection, Oxford. - Private collection, West Germany.
According to tradition (cf. cat.: Sotheby´s, London, 14.4.1948), the present work was discovered in 1870 in the collection of the Counts of Canossa in Verona by no lesser than John Ruskin and attributed by him to Albrecht Dürer. It was purchased on Ruskin's recommendation by the English collector James Reddie Anderson and later sold again by Sotheby's in 1948 as "An important Durer Portrait".

Gemäß der Überlieferung (vgl. Katalog Auktion Sotheby´s, London, 14.4.1948) wurde dieses Gemälde 1870 von keinem Geringeren als John Ruskin in der Sammlung der Grafen von Canossa in Verona entdeckt und Albrecht Dürer zugeschrieben. Auf Anraten von Ruskin erwarb es der englische Sammler James Reddie Anderson. Als "An important Durer Portrait" wurde es 1948 bei Sotheby´s aufgerufen und versteigert.
