Rest on the Flight into Egypt

Provenance
Private collection, Rhineland.
This painting was presumably created by an Antwerp master in the first half of the 16th century, and owes the composition of the landscape to two works by Joachim Patinier. It repeats, with only minor ammendments, the landscape in his "Rest on the Flight into Egypt" now kept in the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid. Patinir himself reiterated the scheme in two panels now kept in the Boijmans van Beuningen Museum in Rotterdam. The figural group surrounding the Virgin is based on the "Rest on the Flight into Egypt" by a follower of Joos van Cleves in the Smid Gelder Museum in Antwerp.

Das Gemälde eines wohl Antwerpener Meisters aus der ersten Hälfte des 16. Jahrhunderts ist was die Landschaft anbelangt zwei Kompositionen von Joachim Patinier verpflichtet. Sie wiederholt mit nur geringen Abweichungen dessen „Ruhe auf der Flucht“ aus dem Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid. Patinier selbst wiederholte sie auf zwei Tafeln, die sich im Museum Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam befinden. Die Figurengruppe der Madonna wiederum geht zurück auf die „Ruhe auf der Flucht“ im Stile Joos van Cleves aus dem Museum Smid Gelder in Antwerpen.
