The Virgin with Angels

Dated lower left: MDXV.
The small format of this panel indicates that it was painted for private devotion or to be shown in a small chapel. It was made by an artist still working in the style of the late 15th century at a time when in the great centres of painting in this country - Rome, Florence and Venice - the “maniera moderna” had already taken root. Typical of the Cremona school is the mixing of elements of cultural influence from numerous other areas, such as Bologna or Ferrara, and the styles of artists such as Andrea Mantegna and Bonifacio Bembo, and these tendencies can be seen in the works of Antonio della Cornas or Niccolò da Cremonas (cf.: Niccolò da Cremona, "Madonna with Saints", signed and dated 1520, Cappella Bolla, Santa Maria delle Grazie, Milan). The plurality of sources and predecessors owes a lot to the geographical and political location of the cities between Veneto, the Emilia Romagna and Lombardy.

Aufgrund des kleineren Formates dieses Tafelbildes kann man davon ausgehen, dass es zur privaten Andacht oder für eine kleine Kapelle gemalt wurde.
