The altar head, Tshol, was the most sacred and revered of all the items of regalia cared for by the Baga clan elder. A-Tshol were displayed in the sacred clan house and were used as an “agent of transformation” according to Fred Lamp (Art of the Baga, New York, 1996, p.87-91) helping to combat sorcery, to protect the clan, and to give any kind of support needed by the clan in general or clan members in particular.
