Später bezeichnet oben links: „Louis-Francois de Bo[ur]bon / Prince de Conti ne en 17[17] / Mort en 1776. Epousa Lo[uis]e / Diane, Fille du Regen[t] / Philippe d'Orleans et de / Mlle de Blois“ (Buchstaben in eckigen Klammern durch eine Retusche verloren bzw. falsch ergänzt).
Entgegen der späteren Bezeichnung handelt es sich bei dem Dargestellten nicht um Louis François de Bourbon, Prince de Conti (1717-1776) sondern um Louis Philippe de Bourbon, Duc d'Orléans (1725-1785). Louis Philippe war der einzige Sohn von Louis I. von Orléans und somit Enkel von Philippe II. von Orléans, dem Regenten Frankreichs von 1715 bis 1723. Unser halbfiguriges Bildnis, das sich an einem Dreiviertelstück von Louis-Michel van Loo orientiert, zeigt Louis Philippe mit Harnisch und dem blauen Band des Ordre du Saint-Esprit.

With a later inscription to the upper left: "Louis-Francois de Bo[ur]bon / Prince de Conti ne en 17[17] / Mort en 1776. Epousa Lo[uis]e / Diane, Fille du Regen[t] / Philippe d'Orleans et de / Mlle de Blois" (the letters in square brackets lost due to retouches or erroneously replaced).
Contrary to the later inscription, this work does not in fact depict Louis François de Bourbon, Prince de Conti (1717-1776), but instead Louis Philippe de Bourbon, Duc d'Orléans (1725-1785). Louis Philippe was the only son of Louis I of Orleans and grandson of Philippe II of Orleans, who was regent of France from 1715 - 1723. This half-length portrait is influenced by a similar, three quarter-length depiction by Louis-Michael van Loo showing Louis Philippe wearing a breastplate and the blue sash of the Ordre du Saint-Esprit.
