„In 1956 Bertoia began to bring the amorphous clouds of steel wire which he had been making down to earth. Retaining the basically ovoid or spheroid shape, he transformed them in terms of yet other natural phenomena: flowers, trees, and growing plants. We can see the basic pattern upon which he worked. Here is certainly the most direct reference to nature that we find in Bertoia to date. The form is obvious: is that of a living organism, a plant, growing up from the ground in a narrow stem and busting at the top into a golden blossom. Other early pieces in this style were reminiscent of sunflowers. They consisted of sharp spikes, which emanated bristle-like from a honeycombed, disc-shaped center. But the quality of perfection, which these early works seem to process in their unbroken, perfectly formed circular boundaries and in their even-textured treatment did not satisfy Bertoia´s love of the „imperfect“. In „Light and Structure,“ 1955, he said: „It is desirable to leave the equation somewhat incomplete, thereby giving the observer a chance for completion…and certainly the value of suggestion is not to be underestimated in winning the observer´s confidence.“ In these works there was little left for the observer to do; the sculptor had done all of the work.
