Pieter Paul Rubens - Abraham and Melchizedek, by Jacob Neeffs This engraving of an enormous scale was printed on two large folio's. It is a very rare work not found in this state anywhere else. One state found in the Ruben house in Antwerp. The meeting of Abraham and Melchizedek, the high priest and king of Salem, who brings bread and wine (Genesis 14:18-20). This subject was very important for the Poor Clares, devoted to the Eucharist miraculously transubstantiates into the body and blood of Christ (See literature below).Engraving by Jacob Neefs (Antwerp 1610 - after 1660) showing a tapestry design by Peter Paul Rubens (ca. 1627). The engraving was printed by Gaspard Huberti. The design oil sketch for the tapestry by Rubens is now in the National Gallery of Art in Washington (see added image for reference only) 63,50 x 88,00 cm / Condition: Good impression on two large folios laid down on a support sheet. Ideal for conservation. Some small tears on or near the margin, also around the flattened middle fold. Overall very good and impressive. Hard to show in the photo's. A large print like this surviving in this condition is very rare, no surprise almost no other impression can be found. The tapestries were to be hung during the feast days of Good Friday and Corpus Christi, which celebrate Christ’s presence in the Eucharist. The subject had profound meaning for the Poor Clares, who were particularly devoted to the Eucharist—the bread and wine of the Mass that Catholics believe miraculously transubstantiates into the body and blood of Christ when consecrated by a priest. Rubens focused on Old Testament prefigurations of the Eucharist and allegorical subjects symbolizing triumph of the Catholic Church over the forces of evil and heresy.---The Meeting of Abraham and Melchizidek is a highly finished modello, or sketch, for one of the Old Testament prefigurations of the Eucharist. This story from Genesis tells of the gifts of bread and wine that Abraham received from the Priest-King of Salem, Melchizedek, after returning from a victorious battle (Gen. 14: 17-20). Catholic theologians viewed Melchizedek’s offering of bread and wine as a prefiguration of the Last Supper, and even saw Melchizedek, whose name means “king of Justice,” as a prefiguration of Christ. In Rubens’s vivid portrayal, the scene unfolds on an illusionistically painted tapestry held aloft by putti before an architectural framework. Abraham, in armor standing at the head of his band of soldiers, appears in the center, gratefully receiving loaves of bread from Melchizidek. As the two men lean toward one another, they lock eyes as though they have a premonition, unshared by the others, that the bread and wine have significance beyond bodily sustenance. --Rubens reinforced the momentousness of the encounter not only through compositional devices, but also through his exuberant style. In this way Rubens both signals the importance of the prefigured Eucharist in the Old Testament and suggests its continued centrality to the Catholic Faith in his own time. Internet live auction (behind closed doors) of Old Master Prints. We auction each lot one by one, approximately 80 lots an hour. Guaranteed original work from mainly 16th and 17th century. Letter of authenticity available on request. A small fee may apply.

The auction includes works by the most prominent old masters, such as Durer, Rembrandt, Wierix, Van Leyden, Goltzius, Van Ostade. In general all schools and subjects are present: German, Italian, French, Flemish and Dutch. We also added a nice selection around the famous Leonardo da Vinci studies of deformed heads;

The auction has an international audience and works with written bids or internet bids only. The internet bids can be made before the start of the auction or 'live' during the auction. For reasons of efficiency no physical inspection of the goods is provided.

Each lot is described to the best of our ability and in good faith. No responsibility will be taken for faults or incomplete info. All disputes over the sale fall as appropriate, under the jurisdiction of the Belgium law, regardless of the domicile of the parties. The Courts of Belgium, and in particular, the justice of peace of the District of IZEGEM or the courts of the judicial district of West Flanders, KORTRIJK section, have exclusive jurisdiction to settle all disputes arising in connection with all aspects of all matters or transactions to which these Conditions of Business relate or apply
The European consumer protection and, in particular, the strict Belgian implementation is applicable. A private citizen if resident of the European Community can return the item for a full refund within 14 days after receipt without limitation of his other rights as provided by the European consumer protection.

Payments must be made in full within 7 business days after receipt of the invoice. The auction house preserves the right to charge the credit card of the buyer 7 days after the auction if not paid before, this according the authorization given by the buyer during the registering process of his credit card on the auction platform of Invaluable.
No responsibility will be taken for the lots if not paid within the prescribed period.

If a lot is not paid in full within 2 weeks, an interest will be charged of 12% a year. If full payment is not made after one month old master print reserves the right to resell the lots and charge the original defaulting bidder with both the difference and the expenses incurred.

All items are sold using the Margin Scheme and it should be noted that the VAT included in bid price and premium is not recoverable as input tax.
