Emil Popov studierte bis 1975 an der Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Sofia, Fachrichtung Skulptur bei Ljuben Dimitrov. Seit 1975 beteiligt sich Emil Popov an allen „Allgemeinen Kunstausstellungen des Bulgarischen Künstlerverbandes“ sowie an zahlreichen nationalen und internationalen Ausstellungen, Biennalen und Symposien. Im Jahr 1992 beteiligte er sich am Bildhauersymposium im Skulpturenpark Katzow. Seit 1983 wirkt er als Professor an der Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Sofia. Emil Popov ist mit zahlreichen Werken in Museen vertreten, Z.B. in der Nationalgalerie Sofia, dem Puschkin-Museum in Moskau, dem Centro Dante in Ravenna, der Neuen Galerie der Sammlung Ludwig in Aachen sowie in Museen in Warschau, Stettin oder Prag. – Emil Popov gehört zu den bedeutendsten zeitgenössischen Künstlern Bulgariens. Sein eigenwilliges Werk wird durch figurative Darstellungen geprägt, expressionistische Formen begründen die Wirkung seiner Plastiken. In seinem Werk lebt aber auch die Tradition antiker Skulpturen fort und wird in Zeitzeugnisse verwandelt. - Emil Popov studied until 1975 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Sofia, specializing in sculpture under Ljuben Dimitrov. Since 1975 Emil Popov participates in all "General Art Exhibitions of the Bulgarian Artists' Association" as well as in numerous national and international exhibitions, biennials and symposia. In 1992 he participated in the sculpture symposium in Katzow Sculpture Park. Since 1983 he has worked as a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Sofia. Emil Popov is represented with numerous works in museums, p.e. in the National Gallery Sofia, the Pushkin Museum in Moscow, the Centro Dante in Ravenna, the New Gallery of the Ludwig Collection in Aachen, as well as in museums in Warsaw, Szczecin or Prague. - Emil Popov is one of the most important contemporary artists in Bulgaria. His idiosyncratic work is characterized by figurative representations, expressionist forms establish the effect of his sculptures. In his work, however, the tradition of antique sculptures lives on and is transformed into witnesses of the times.
