"An important work both for its scope and the amount of information it provides, particularly on the Aegean islands. Olivier was a naturalist and entomologist who was sent on a French government mission to Persia in 1792. He was delayed for some considerable time in Constantinople and then travelled to Egypt via the Archipelago and Asia Minor. He did mot reach Persia until 1795. The plates include maps, plans, costumes, plants and animals. Some of the fine natural history plates are by P. J. Redouté" (Blackmer). - Schönes, sauberes Exemplar. First edition, simultaneously published with a 4to edition. With 15 maps and plans, 7 of which are folding or double-leaf, and 18 plates, all illustrations forming the Atlas to the first 4 volumes as present here. The Otoman section, Egypt and Syria are complete, the set missing the two volumes about Persia and pertaining illustrations. Attractively bound in contemporary calf gilt, some rubbing. A fine copy.
