"Alberti represented the fifteenth century at its best, exercising an influence over the spirit of his age second only to Leonardo... His 'De re aedificatoria', especially in the theoretical treatment of the subject and in relating it to the ancient text of Vitruvius, played an important part in the literary output of his successors" (Fowler). - Etwas gebräunt u. fleckig, teilw. auch wasserrandig, erste ca. 10 Bll. mit sorgfältiger Restaurierung im Text sowie kl. Restaurierung im äußersten Rand, Bl. A2 im Außensteg u. Schlußbl. verso alter Stempel.
Second edition, the first printing in France, of "the first work on architecture to be printed" (Fowler). With Rembolt's "handsome and uncommon" (Murray) large device on the title-page, surrounded by Criblé strip borders on three sides, and Hornken's device on the last page. - Some browning and staining, expert restorations to first c. 10 leaves, old stamp to outer margin of second and verso of last leaf. Contemp. limp vellum, somewhat stained, endpapers and spine renewed, without ties.
