Enthält neben Auszügen aus zahlreichen botanischen Schriften auch Teile des von Parkinson erworbenen, noch unveröffentlichten Nachlasses von Lobelius. U.a. werden 28 bis zu diesem Zeitpunkt in England noch nicht registrierte Pflanzenarten beschrieben, darunter Frauenschuh, Erdbeerbaum, eine Mohnart u.a. "While Parkinson's reputation was established by the appearance of his 'Paradisus' in 1629, the latter was overshadowed by the publication in 1640 of what was his much greater work, the 'Theatrum Botanicum' ... This digest attempted the description of nearly 4,000 plants, almost 1000 more than were contained in Johnson's edition of Gerard. The descriptions in many instances are new and great care was erxercised to secure accuracy in indicating localties" (J. R. Green, zit. nach Hunt). - Da das Werk einbändig ist, aber hier in zwei Bände gebunden wurde, ist der Drucktitel u. 1 Bl. Vorrede vor S. 957 gebunden worden, der Kupfertitel u. die übrigen Vorstücke vor S. 1. Stellenw. leicht fleckig, vereinzelt mit kl. Wasserfleck im Rand; Drucktitel, 1 Bl. Vorstücke u. ca. S. 957-974 mit Wurmgang im Satzspiegel, ca. S. 150-230 mit Wurmloch oder kl. Wurmgang in der unteren Innenecke. Mit Supralibros und gest. Wappenexlibris der bedeutenden Familie Pelham-Clinton. Die Bibliothek von Clumber House wurde nach dem Tod von Henry Pelham-Clinton (1864-1928), 7th Duke of Newcastle, 1937/38 als "Clumber Library" von Sotheby's versteigert; daß das vorliegende Exemplar aus dieser Versteigerung stammt, belegt ein Bleistiftvermerk auf dem hinteren Vorsatz des ersten Bandes. Auf dem freien Vorsatz außerdem das von Eric Gill entworfene Exlibris von Thereze Mary Hope. Bound in 2 vols. With engr. title and numerous woodcuts in the text. - Some staining here and there, marginal waterstain to few leaves; wormtrail to printed title and few leaves, small marginal wormtrail to c. 40 leaves. - 18th century calf gilt with the Pelham Clinton arms and bookplate, worn. From the Clumber Library sold in 1938 after the 7th Duke's of Newcastle death.
