Taf. 179; Ders., California 25; McLaughlin/M. 41. - Seltene Karte des Kontinents mit schönen Randleisten, kopiert nach Ausgaben von Kaerius u. Visscher 1614 bzw. 1652. Von der 1658 datierten Erstausgabe ist nur 1 Bibliotheks-Ex. bekannt; die 2. Aufl. mit der ausgekratzten, aber noch schwach lesbaren Dat., erschien nur in Heylyns 'Cosmographia' bei Chetwind 1660-62. - Mit Wasserzeichen: Weintraube bzw. kl., unleserl. Monogramm. - Guter Abdruck. In den Rändern u. den genannten Faltstellen etwas gebräunt bzw. braunfleckig, mit wenigen kl. Rissen oder winzigen Löchlein (haupts. 3 kl. Risse im Bug). Rare map by Walton copied after Kaerius and Visscher with improvements after Blaeu 1648. California as an island in a "fascinating depiction (which) attempts to balance the many theories at the time" (B.), Furthermore Boston has been added, but no mention of New Amsterdam, in contrast "Hudson Bay, found on the Kaerius/Visscher map only in the inset, is here included in the main map" (S./S.). The decorative borders show 8 costumed figures, 6 portraits of navigators, and oval views of [strong]"Havana - Mexico City - Cusco - Pomeiooc - Carolina - S. Iacobs I. - Cartagena - Potosus - Phernambuco - S. Domingo"[/strong]. Our copy in the second state with the former date of 1658 erased, printed on thin paper and with folds to small folio, because inserted in the 1660-62 ed. of Heylin. - Uncol., good impression. Some browning resp. spotting to margins and folds, and with few small tears o tiny holes (3 at centerfold).
