Bd. 1 beschreibt den Teil der Reise von St. Petersburg über Twer, Moskau, Woronesh, Taganrog, die Krim und Odessa in die Türkei, der umfangreiche Bd. 2 (in 3 Teilen) Griechenland, Ägypten und Palästina, Band 3 (in zwei Teilen) Skandinavien sowie St. Petersburg, also den Beginn der Reise. Nur diese Quartausgabe, deren erste Bände vor Erscheinen des letzten, posthum erschienenen Bandes bis zu dreimal aufgelegt wurden, ist reichhaltig illustriert, die Oktavausgabe enthält lediglich 43 Tafeln und Karten.
