Nissen, BBI 1955. - Die etwas verkleinerte Nachstich-Ausgabe von Thorntons "New illustration of the sexual system of Linnaeus", "the most famous English botanical plate book ever produced" (de Belder). Die vorliegende Quartausgabe ist nicht mit der sogenannten Lotterie-Ausgabe zu verwechseln, die 1810 von den bereits abgenutzten Folio-Platten erfolgte. Der besondere, in den Nachstichen sorgfältig gewahrte Reiz des Werkes liegt in der bewußt exotisch-romantischen Auswahl und Darstellung der Pflanzen mit aufwendiger Stich- und Drucktechnik. Unter den farbigen Tafeln (Blattgr. ca. 37,5:29 cm) eine Rosengruppe, Hyazinthen, Tulpen, Lilien, Passionsblumen, Seerosen etc. Im Vergleich mit Dunthorne fehlt die erste Tafel "Snowdrop", dafür mit zusätzlicher Tafel "Persian Cyclamen". - Etwas gebräunt, vereinzelt etwas fleckig, vereinzelt geringer Textabklatsch. Front. seitlich beschnitten u. lose. Front. verso u. 2. Titel oben mit Namens- bzw. Monogrammstempel, 1. Titel mit Namenszug im oberen Rand. Quarto-edition, plates re-engraved in smaller size than the original folio plates. 28 (incl. front.) colour-printed aquatint and mezzotint plates finished by hand, "each in an exotic and romantic setting" (de Belder). - Some browning and spotting, slight offsetting to plates in places. Front. trimmed and loose, small collector's stamp to front. verso and second title, name on first title. Bound in contemp. green morocco gilt, gilt edges; somewhat rubbed, corners bumped.
