Nordamerika. "Le Canada, ou Nouvelle France". Grenzkol. Kupf.-Kte. von N. Sanson bei P. Mariette, Paris, 1656; gest. von I. Somer. Mit ornament. Kart. 40:54 cm.
Burden 318; Kershaw 133 u. S. 127f.; Cumming 48 u. Taf. 30; Goss 33. - Seltene u. wichtige Karte. - Leicht gebräunt u. etwas fleckig, meist durch Koloritabklatsch. Oben u. unten bis an den Plattenrand beschnitten; Bug verstärkt.
Scarce and most influential map of north-western America. The Great Lakes, St. Lawrence River and Hudson Bay are depicted in more detail and more accurate, incl. amongst others the first application of Lake Erie. "Often passing unnoticed are the improvements that Sanson made in his east coast delineation. Long Island is introduced, and New Amsterdam placed in its correct position" (B.). Derived from Jesuit manuscripts, "Sanson's map is also outstanding as a source-map for Indian tribal names and locations" (K. p. 125). - Contemp. col. in outline. Light browning and some spotting, mostly due to colour offsetting. Cut to platemark at top and bottom, centerfold backed with old paper.
