Frankreich. Plancius-Florimi Frankreich. "Gallia". Kupf.-Kte. nach P. Pla(n)cius von M. Florimi, (Siena), um 1600. Mit je 1 gr. u. kl. fig. u. herald. Rollwerkskart. u. 2 Segelschiffen. 39:48 cm. Nicht bei Heijden, Florimi (in: Speculum Orbis IV/1-2) u.a., vgl. aber Plancius bei Schilder, MCN VII, S. 379ff., 15.2 u. New Hollstein, Doetecum IV, 911. [br] Seltener Nachstich der Plancius-Karte von 1592, aber ohne dessen Windrosen u. nur mit 2 (statt 3) Segelschiffen in der Nordsee. Heijden führt zwar eine Frankreich-Karte mit Florimis Adresse auf, doch bei dieser handelt es sich wie bei den meisten nachweisbaren Ex. um die Kopie nach Gerhard Mercator (mit 2 kl. Rollwerkskartuschen unten links). - Rechts mittig nicht identifizierbares Wasserzeichen. [br] Ingesamt guter Abdruck, nur die Figurenstaffage in der Kart. leicht flau. Mit etwas Plattenton bzw. leicht gebräunt; etwas stock- u. braunfleckig. Geplatzte Bugfalte tlw. mit einfachem Japanpapier hinterlegt. Links im Bildrand vertikale Knickfalte; oben u. unten knapp beschnitten, rechts schmaler, weißer Rand alt mit Papier überklebt, Graduierung leimfleckig. So far unrecorded copy, not mentioned in bibliographies or library catalogues at our disposal. Matteo Florimi of Siena was wellknown around 1600 for his reproductions of maps and views, mostly after contemporary fellowers. The only and still relevant listing of his works was compiled by Heijden, who also mentions a map of "Gallia", but this is the known one after Gerhard Mercator. The original map by Petrus Plancius of 1592, in turn a copy after the one by Postel, is described at length by Prof. Schilder, including 4 derivatives (see the variant by Vrients in this catalogue too). The major difference of the map by Florimi to all the other copies is obviously the lacking of the decorative compass roses, and just 2 ships are shown in the German Ocean. [br] Uncol.; in general a good impression, only figures to one cartouche a bit faint. Lightly toned resp. browned, some foxing and spotting, discoloration from paste to graduation at right. Partly repaired split through centerfold. Vertical fold at left border; cut close at top and bottom, old paperstrip pasted over the small white margin at right.
