[br] Äußerst seltene Karte von Frankreich, die nur als Einblattdruck erschienen ist u. von Ortelius "aus unbekannten Gründen" (M.) nicht regelmäßig in seine Ausgaben des Theatrum übernommen wurde - van den Broecke kennt nur vereinzelte Ex. in Atlanten. In diesen findet sich zumeist nur diejenige nach Jean Jolivet bzw. ab 1606 die ebenfalls nach Postel erstellte Version von Petrus Plancius in den späten Ausg. bei J. B. Vrients. [br] Guillaume Postel, franz. Universalgelehrter (1510-1581) publizierte seine Karte 1570 in Paris als Holzschnitt (von 2 Stöcken gedruckt; nur 1 nachgewiesenes Ex. in der Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris), die lt. Meurer eine "in vielen Details verbesserte Überarbeitung der Frankreich-Karte von Jean Jolivet" ist. Selbst Marcel Destombes, der erst 1985 eine ausführliche Liste der kartographischen Werke Postels inkl. der Nachstiche veröffentlichte, kannte nur die Variante aus dem Frankreich-Atlas von Marcel Bouguereau, die er abschätzend kommentiert: "Il est dommage qu'Ortelius n'ait pas publié cette carte car il aurait mieux fait que Bouguereau". [br] Das hier angebotene Ex. stammt aus einem Sammelatlas (s. Zustand) u. liegt als ungewöhnlicher Probeabzug ohne Rückentext u. gepunktete Grenzlinien im Kartenbild vor. [br] Gering fleckig, Kolorit der Randleiste tlw. verwischt. Im Bug oben kl. Wurmspur, ferner Wurmstich u. -gang im weißen Ober- u. Unterrand. Breite Papiermaske auf die schmalen Originalränder bis an die Einfassung montiert, daher dort rundum leimschattig, Papiermaske generell etwas fleckig. Exceedingly scarce map by Ortelius, being a reduced copy of the famous woodcut map by Guillaume Postel of 1570, of which just one copy is known in Paris. This map was never "regularly" included in the Theatrum editions, although it shows some improvement to the generally inserted one by Jolivet. [br] According to van den Broecke only a total of "five or six copies have survived", and only in his revised ed. of his guide on Ortelius he mentions state 35.0: "a copy of this map exists without the dotted lines indicating province and country borders, most probably a proof state". The copy offered - in comparison with the one illustrated by Meurer - lacks indeed these lines, which can be clearly seen in the regions near Genoa, around the Lake Geneva and in the Pyrenees. Furthermore printed without text on reverse, and coming from a sammelatlas (s. condition). All in all this map is a cartographic highlight, and of great importance in the study of the work of Ortelius. [br] Contemp. col. in outline to coastlines, cartouches and border col. too, the latter somewhat smeared in places. Minor spotting in places; few worming at centerfold, just one affecting upper image of map. Papermask pasted on small original white margins up to outer ornamental borders, causing some discoloration from paste, some brownish spotting to the white margins.
