IV/3, 492, 110, I alpha; Hagen 416; Kippenberg 401. - Erste Ausgabe, erster Druck: eines der seltenen Exemplare mit dem urprünglichen Druck der S. 7-10 (mit falscher Überschrift "Talismane und Amulete" auf S. 9 ) und dem Neudruck dieser Seiten auf dem letzten Bogen zwischen den S. 548/49 und 552/553, S. 399/400 doppelt gezählt, dafür S. 495/96 übersprungen. - Etwas stockfleckig. Sehr schönes Exemplar. First edition, rare first issue (pp. 7-10 preserved in first state, 2 cancels kept as issued within the last quire). - The "Divan" is the most famous literary adaptation of Oriental poetry and thought in the West. It is divided into several Namehs or books, including e.g. "Suleika" (on the beloved), "Saki" (on the winehouse), "Hikmet" (proverbs). Though initially inspired by translations from the Persian, Goethe turned to the whole range of Oriental literature then available in the course of his work. The most influential advisor he won was Heinrich Friedrich von Diez, Prussian ambassador to the Porte 1784-90, enthousiastic about everything Turkish and an eminent translator. Due to him, the "Divan" is accompanied by a voluminous commentary, thus expressing both in poetry and prose the vivid concern the romantic age felt for the Orient. - Foxing in places, otherwise in fine state. Attractively bound in contemporary red full-calf, richly gilt.
