Beaded Ceremonial Dancing Cover For Queen Mother In Custom Made Frame - Tribal Art
The skin, covered completely with red, white, black and blue glass beads, references stylistically to the animal: head with two fierce open eyes and the triangular moustache. This skin is worn only by members of the Kwosi society during the Tso dance and is associated with a assorted vest and belt. The Kwosi society is reserved for royal and notable men and women and oversees the general economic and military mobilization in case severe problems menace the survival or honor of the kingdom. The beaded skin has been framed behind antireflexive glass and is in good condition. Rulers throughout the many Kingdoms in the Cameroon Grassland region (Bamileke –Bamum -Tikar) employed a range of Regalia to assert their political, economic and religious power. Presented publicly in lavish displays of wealth and power, many court objects were distinguished by their elaborate bead embroidery. Imported from Venice, Bohemia or Amsterdam, glass beads were considered a luxury material whose use and distribution were controlled by the King. The decoration of objects with vast quantities of brilliantly colored beads transformed utilitarian objects into symbols of royal status and prestige.
