Mexican school; c. 1830.
"Portrait of a girl with relatives.
Oil on canvas. Re-coloured.
It presents repainting.
Measurements: 132 x 105 cm.
In a strictly triangular composition the author arranges three characters; two situated in the lower area and one in the centre that stands out from the rest, because she appears portrayed in her totality, while of the others only the face can be appreciated. The young woman in the scene is dressed in a blue dress, adorned with a large ribbon around her neck and a chain with a crucifix hanging from it. In her hand she is holding a book, which suggests that she is an educated, educated young woman. It should also be noted that on the left-hand side of the scene, which is barely visible due to the darkness of the canvas, the figure of a little bird can be seen, a symbol of innocence and youth. It is probable, given the attributes described above, that the work was conceived with the intention of presenting the young woman in society, so that the figures in the lower part are probably her parents. For this reason, the woman has a greater role, perhaps also with a matchmaking intention, where she is presented through her family ties, highlighting values such as innocence, education and, of course, devotion.
It is worth mentioning that, during the Spanish colonial domination, a mainly religious painting was developed, aimed at Christianising the indigenous peoples. Local painters were modelled on Spanish works, which they followed literally in terms of type and iconography. The most frequent models were the harquebusier angels and the triangular virgins, but in the early years of the 19th century, at the time of the independence and political opening of some of the colonies, several artists began to represent a new model of painting with its own identity. Moreover, not only the aesthetics changed, but also the subject matter, as there began to be a great interest in portraiture. With the intention of immortalising a small aristocracy or an incipient bourgeoisie, who had a long family tradition and had already disassociated themselves from the Spanish government, emerging on their own.
