"Die Gesamtkomposition wie die Ausführung des eindrucksvollen Meeresbildes mit ziehenden Wolken am Himmel, einem mächtigen Felsen in der Brandung des bewegten Meeres, auf dessen Wellen ein großer Dreimaster und ein Schiff unterwegs sind, während ein weiteres Boot vom Ufer ausläuft und auf dem festen Land verschiedene Männer sich beschäftigen, sind von David Teniers dem Jüngeren. Einzig die Schiffe ließ dieser von dem in Antwerpen hochgeschätzten, für die Marine spezialisierten Bonaventura Peeters hineinmalen. Die Spezialisierung auf bestimmte Fachbereiche und damit verbunden eine Zusammenarbeit unterschiedlicher Künstler gehört im 17. Jahrhundert zu den festen Werkstattgepflogenheiten in der Scheldestadt. Das koloristisch delikat ausgeführte Gemälde entstand um die Mitte der 1640er Jahre in Antwerpen. Von besonderer atmosphärischer Wirkung ist das Licht der von den Wolken verdeckten Sonne, deren Widerschein alles durchdringt und als Spiegelung zu sehen ist."

"The overall composition, as well as the execution of the impressive ocean image with drifting clouds in the sky, a mighty rock in the surf of the turbulent water, on whose waves a large three-master and a boat are underway, whilst another boat sets off from the coast and various men busy themselves on land, is by David Teniers the Younger. Only the boats did he leave to paint into the piece by Bonaventura Peeters who was highly respected in Antwerp and specialised in the Navy. The specialisation in specific fields and the collaboration of various artists that comes with it belongs to the standard workshop practices of the Schelde-city in the 17th century. The colouristically delicately executed painting was created in the middle of the 1640s in Antwerp. An especially atmospheric effect is the light of the sun covered by clouds, whose reverberation pierces through everything and can be seen as a reflection."
