IMMORTAL OR PROTECTOR DEITY
Wood with gilding. Korea or Japan, 19th cent.
An almost entirely gilded figure of a protector deity or of an immortal sage, standing on a powerfully rendered cloud pedestal. The attribute once held in the right hand (spear or rod) is missing; the left hand holds an object that bears similarities to a bottle-gourd, but with a pointed end. The bottle-gourd would be an attribute of the immortals, as the elixir of life is stored within it. This could possibly be more of a Daoistic-Chinese inspired version. The expression on the bearded face is strained with protruding eyes, the upper body is mostly naked on the front, and the shoulders are covered. The apron is heavily creased and fluttering in the wind towards one side. Around the dense hair on the head is a ring, with a frontal stylized symbol of the “mushroom of longevity”. Some faults, overall good condition. Opening on the back for temple-offerings.

Eine fast zur Gänze vergoldete Figur einer Schutzgottheit oder eines unsterblichen Magiers, die auf einem kraftvoll ausgeführten Wolkensockel steht. Das einst in der rechten Hand gehaltene Attribut (Speer oder Stab) fehlt, in der linken Hand wird ein Gegenstand gehalten, der einem Flaschenkürbis ähnelt, jedoch spitz ausläuft. Der Flaschenkürbis wäre ein Attribut der Unsterblichen, da in ihm das Lebenselixier aufbewahrt wird. Möglicherweise liegt hier eine mehr daoistisch-chinesisch inspirierte Version vor. Der Ausdruck im bärtigen Gesicht ist angestrengt mit hervortretenden Augen, der Oberkörper ist nach vorne hin weitgehend nackt, die Schultern sind bedeckt. Der Schurz ist faltenreich und flattert im Wind zu einer Seite hin. Um die dichte schwarze Kopfbehaarung ein Ring mit frontseits dem stilisierten Symbol vom „Langlebenspilz“.
Ein paar Fehlstellen, insgesamt jedoch guter Zustand. Rückseits ein Verschluß für Weihgaben.
