This disc represents an interesting case of a jade which was originally crafted in the Bronze Age and then re-carved much later on, during the Late Imperial period. The original disc was plain, while the decoration, inspired by ancient motifs and thus archaistic in style, was probably added during the late Ming or Qing dynasties. The pattern carved on both sides of the jade consists mostly of curls of different sizes which are regularly and symmetrically arranged within the four quadrants of the disc. Small patterns formed by intersecting lines are also etched at equidistant intervals on the surface of the jade. At a first glance the overall pattern looks abstract, but the motif is probably derived from the ancient taotie mask which has been rendered in a very stylized manner. The jade is highly polished, translucent and green in colour: the reddish veins in the stone are generated by the oxidation of the iron contained in the stone.
