PAIR OF STANDING DIGNITAIRIES FROM THE IMPERIAL COURT
Terracotta with paint coating and gilding. China, Tang-Dynasty, approx. 8th cent.
Unusually large, artistically outstanding and rare sculptures of courtly dignitaries. Both stand on rugged plinths and are conceived mirroring one another. Floor-length robes with broad sleeves; concealed under one on each figure is an elevated hand, the other swings far out sideways. Strongly curved shoes, the tall hat is lobed in a heart-shape and each of them wears a cylindrical decorative element. Especially sophisticated is the rendition of the faces, which reflect the high courtly culture of the Tang-period, as well as its prosperity. Finely formed eyes, the nose alike, overall conveying nobility. The original paint is – with regard to its age – very well preserved. On the chest and back, floral decorative fields with gold borders, likewise flowers in the bottom area of the undergarment. The seams on the sleeves as well as the lower edge of the outer garment are gilded. The colours of the outer garments on the figures are contrasting, that is to say red and green. These terracotta sculptures are quite surely burial goods from a high-ranking person of the Tang-period. Rare original preservation, restorations on exposed areas cannot be ruled out. Some weathering and earth-encrustations. A TL-test confirms the age.

Außergewöhnlich große, künstlerisch herausragend modellierte wie seltene Skulpturen von höfischen Würdenträgern. Beide sind auf felsigem Sockel stehend und gegenständig ausgeführt. Bodenlange Gewandung mit weiten Ärmeln, unter dem einen ist jeweils eine erhobene Hand verborgen, der andere schwingt weit seitlich aus. Stark hochgebogene Schuhe, der hohe Hut ist herzförmig gelappt und trägt jeweils ein walzenförmiges Schmuckelement. Besonders feinsinnig ist die Gestaltung der Gesichter, welche die hohe höfische Kultur der Tang-Zeit ebenso wie deren Wohlhabenheit spiegeln. Feinst gebildete Augen, ebenso die Nasen, insgesamt Noblesse wiedergebend. Die originale Bemalung ist - altersbezogen gesehen – sehr gut erhalten. Auf der Brust und rückseits jeweils ein florales Zierfeld mit goldener Umrahmung, Blüten gleichfalls im untersten Bereich der unteren Kleidung. Die Säume an Ärmeln sowie am unteren Rand des Oberkleids sind vergoldet. Die Farbe des Oberkleides ist an beiden Figuren kontrastierend, nämlich rot und grün. Diese Terrakotta-Skulpturen sind aus der Grabausstattung einer sicher sehr hochstehend gewesenen Person der Tang-Zeit.
