CONG
Jade. China, Late Shang, early Western Zhou period, 13th-10th cent. BC-771 BC
After the Neolithic period, jade cong continued to be carved into the following Shang and Western Zhou dynasties, however, the typical mask motifs customarily used to decorate the registers of Liangzhu cong (see Nos. 74 and 73) were abandoned in favour of a plainer and simpler surface. Liangzhu culture cong, especially the taller ones, also have a slender, tapering profile while those crafted during the Bronze Age have a much sharper and straighter silhouette, thus looking as hollow cylindrical tubes encased within a square shape. The present example has a rather sturdy appearance: the body is solid and thick and in the middle of the hollowed central perforation there is a small ridge that was not smoothed down during the polishing phase. The top and bottom collars are not completely even and the cong has a slightly tilted profile. The jade is opaque and heavily altered and the original texture of the stone only occasionally surfaces here and there. In many areas the alteration is so strong that the jade has become brittle and fallen off, particularly in one area close to the upper border of the cong. The surface is also crossed by long natural veins in the stone which have turned brown in colour due to the oxidization of the iron contained in the stone. ?? -????, ????, ???13??-?10??All archaic jades expertized by Univ.
