A CARVED HORNBILL SNUFF BOTTLE Hornbill of even ivory color with layers of elegant golden-brown tone, well-polished with a nice even shine, good patina. China, 1820-1880Delicately carved to depict a scholar with his attendant at the gate of a palace, with a straying dog on the lower right, a cottage in background, the scene surrounded by serrated rockwork and various trees. Verso two sages standing on the terrace of a pavilion under two giant trees, which are so high that clouds can be found between their leaves.
