PONTING (HERBERT) 'Grotto in an Iceberg', large green-tinted carbon print, mounted, 2 very light abrasions, 'H.G. Ponting Copyright' blind-stamp lower right, Fine Art Society printed label (with title caption and exhibition number '118' in pencil) on verso of mount with pencil note 'Aitkin, Cheltenham', 740 x 540mm., [5 January 1911] Footnotes: One of Ponting's most celebrated images. 'This unique study was made from the heart of an iceberg. The grotto was formed by a berg as it turned over, carrying a large floe up with it, which froze on to it, leaving this beautiful cavern, through which it was possible to walk for over a hundred feet. By good fortune, at the the time the artist reached this spot, the Terra Nova could be seen in the distance...' (Fine Art Society, The British Antarctic Expedition 1910-1913. Exhibition of the Photographic Pictures of Mr. Herbert G. Ponting, F.R.G.S., 1913, no.118). The Fine Art Society mounted the first public exhibition of Ponting's photographs at their gallery in New Bond Street, London on 4 December 1913, displaying 146 images, and generating some 680 orders. They were available in four sizes, the present sample being the largest exhibition format.
