'The ship is on its side, punching its way into a wave. It dramatically depicts the men working on the deck when they could easily have been swept to their deaths. Ponting would have been risking his own life to take this photograph from the rigging...' (D. Hempleman-Adams, S. Gordon, E. Stuart and A. Donnithorne, The Heart of the Great Alone. The Fine Art Society mounted the first public exhibition of Ponting's photographs at their gallery in New Bond Street, London on 4 December 1913, displaying 146 images, and generating some 680 orders.
