Roland Strasser (Austrian, 1895-1974) A Geisha, Kyoto signed, inscribed and dated 'Strasser/KYOTO/1927' (lower left) watercolour, bodycolour and gold paint on buff paper 36.8 x 15.2cm (14 1/2 x 6in). Footnotes: Provenance With Martyn Gregory, London. Exhibited London, Martyn Gregory, The Art of the China Trade, 2010-11, catalogue 86, no.72. Attached to the old backboard of this picture is a newspaper review of Strasser's exhibition of Paterson's Gallery in Bond Street, London. Strasser studied in both Vienna and Munich before travelling throughout the Far East between 1920 and 1927, where he visited Kyoto towards the end of his travels. In 1934 he exhibited two Balinese subjects at the Royal Academy. On his return from his travelling he lived in the United States from 1952 until his death. Attached to the old backboard of this picture is a newspaper review of Strasser's exhibition at Paterson's Gallery in Bond Street, London. The review refers to the artist's 'escape from a Bolshevist prison' and journey through China, where most of his drawings were 'destroyed by roving bands of Nationalist Chinese soldiery'. The reviewer notes the artist's 'sense of intimate understanding'- 'Mr Strasser paints his Lamas and Mongolian Princesses and knitting soldiers and Japanese Geishas ad they might be painted by one of their own kin trained in the modern European manner.'
