Charles Wirgman Sr. (British, 1832-1891) Japanese figure studies, a set of four all signed 'C Wirgman' (lower right) watercolour heightened with white each 24.4 x 16.9cm (9 5/8 x 6 5/8in). (4) framed as one Footnotes: Wirgman moved to Japan in 1861 and lived in Yokohama until his death in 1891. Working as a correspondent for the Illustrated London news, he became known for his cartoons which were regularly published in the magazine. In 1862 he created the satirical comic magazine The Japan Punch which was published monthly until 1887. Illustrated with cartoons, it commented on the social and political issues facing Yokohama. In the 1860s Wirgman accompanied British Envoy Sir Ernest Satow on multiple journeys around Japan, as described in A Diplomat in Japan.
