Provenance: Violet E. Oates (1881-1966, sister of Captain Laurence Oates), ownership inscription on front free endpaper of volume 3. This volume is one of a few printed 'Presentation Copies' (colophon), and was presumably given to the Oates family in remembrance of Captain Oates, who famously died on the return journey from the Pole; Dr. Ronald Lewis-Smith, purchased in 1972.
