South Polar Times, 3 vol., LIMITED EDITIONS, volumes 1-2 numbers 193 of 250 copies, volume 3 one of 350 copies (stamped as 'Presentation Copy'), titles and text printed in red and blue, numerous plates and illustrations throughout (many chromolithographed, some mounted) after Herbert Ponting, Edward Wilson and others, a few leaves in each volume working loose and light off-setting from title to frontispieces, light damp-stain to fore-margin of opening leaves of the third volume but generally clean throughout, newspaper obituary of Frank Debenham pasted inside upper cover of volume 3, publisher's blue ribbed cloth gilt, upper covers with colour pictorial inset panels, g.e., damp-stain to fore-edge of both covers of volume 3 [Conrad, pp.111, 121 and 173; Renard 1433 and 1434; Rosove 287.A1 and 291.A2.b; Spence 1094; Taurus 42, 79; OCLC 10187942], 4to (283 x 224mm.), Smith Elder, 1907-1914; together with the first published limited edition of 500 copies of volume 4 of of The South Polar Times, 2010 (4) Footnotes: Complete set of one of the cornerstones of Antarctic literature, which reproduce in lithographed facsimile 'typescripts produced by members of Scott's party during three bleak Antarctic winters spent in his company' (Taurus) during both his Discovery (volumes 1 and 2) and Terra Nova (volume 3) Expeditions, both finely illustrated throughout with views, caricatures and other illustrations, many by Edward Wilson. Provenance: Violet E. Oates (1881-1966, sister of Captain Laurence Oates), ownership inscription on front free endpaper of volume 3. This volume is one of a few printed 'Presentation Copies' (colophon), and was presumably given to the Oates family in remembrance of Captain Oates, who famously died on the return journey from the Pole; Dr. Ronald Lewis-Smith, purchased in 1972.
