SHACKLETON-ROWLETT 'QUEST' EXPEDITION, 1921-1922 A fine group of approximately 200 photographs, mostly by A. Macklin, F.H. Wilkins, and other Expedition members, including images of the crew, the Quest at various stages of the journey from departure to the ice and Tristan da Cunha on return journey, scenes on South Georgia, the whaling station at Grytviken, etc., many used in Shackleton's Last Voyage. The Story of the 'Quest' (1923), or related, gelatin silver prints, several with printer's annotations (for publication in 'Last Voyage', including portrait of Shackleton with F.A. Swaine studio stamp), a few others with annotations on verso (one inscribed by the Expedition cook C.J. Green to Macklin), all loose, various sizes, but typically approx. 115 x 150mm., or 85 x 240mm., [1921-1922, but printed c.1923, or later]; together with approximately 50 modern duplicates, and a second edition of Shackleton's Last Voyage (quantity) Footnotes: A fine collection of photographs of Ernest Shackleton's Quest Expedition to the Antarctic, from the collection of the Expedition's surgeon A.H. Macklin. They depict all aspects of the voyage, from departure to the return, and Shackleton's funeral, and include some marked up for use in Frank Wild's Shackleton's Last Voyage. The Story of the Quest... From the Official Journal and Private Diary Kept by Dr. A.H. Macklin (1923). Provenance: Dr. A.H. Macklin (1889-1967), member of both Shackleton's Imperial Trans-Antarctic 'Endurance' Expedition (1914-1917), and the Shackleton-Rowett Expedition. He was one of the main photographers on this Expedition, and his diary was a major source of Wild's official account of the voyage; gifted to the vendor, Dr. Roland Lewis-Smith, who notes 'Dr & Mrs Macklin were near neighbours of mine in Cults, Aberdeenshire. Jean [Macklin's wife] was at school with my mother... After Alec's death and at the time I was going to work at South Georgia (1969-71) Jean invited me to look through.. some of Alec's Antarctic memorabilia. Since it was he (and James 'Scout' Marr) who had inspired my Antarctic career with the British Antarctic Survey she offered me a box of b/w prints of the Endurance and Quest...'.
