'Marr, the Zoologist, twenty-two years old, could no longer be called an amateur sailor. Heavily-built, dark, five feet ten, with a dour Scots face - like a prize-fighter - he was the strongest man on board and our champion at stowing any sail, square or fore or aft, in the ship. He could also stow bear-steak. We had been shipmates before, in Shackleton's 'Quest,' and pals ever since' (Worsley, Under Sail..., p.24). Marr is mentioned on 28 pages of the text, always positively. Provenance: James 'Scout' Marr (1902-1965, polar explorer), presentation inscription from the author, and additional inscription in his hand 'James Marr from his skipper'.
