DICKENS (CHARLES) Autograph letter signed ('Charles Dickens'), to C.F. Smith ('Dear Sir'), thanking him for his '...earnest letter...' and '...for the 'offering' contained in it: a truthful and elegant piece of writing...', bearing note by Smith on verso ('...Having two letters of later date, and expressed in even kinder terms, from Mr Dickens, I can afford to part with this one, & hope it will be acceptable to Mrs Davis or to any of her friends...'), one page, dust-staining and marks, creased at folds, remains of mounts on reverse, 8vo (180 x 114mm.), Tavistock House, 4 March 1857 Footnotes: This letter would appear to be unpublished and is not included in the Pilgrim edition of Dickens' letters nor in the Charles Dickens Letters Project online. It may well relate to a submission for the weekly Household Words which Dickens edited from 1850 to 1859. A copy of Household Words with the ownership inscription of a C.F. Smith of Greenoch, which could possibly be our recipient, is held in Eton College library, ref.B49845. A note on the reverse by the recipient confirms he is happy to donate this letter to Mrs Davis' autograph collection as he has two others of a later date.
