Harpers Ferry U.S. Model 1795 Type III Musket with State of Ohio Markings Converted to Percussion, Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, 1815. 45 in., .78 caliber barrel with 'US' and eagle's head over 'P' proof marks in sunken oval cartouches at the breech and marked 'OHIO'; flat lock plate with pointed tail marked 'HARPERS/FERRY/1815' behind the cock and eagle in front; walnut stock marked 'GC' behind the trigger guard and inspector's mark 'V/JS' and 'V/MH' behind the side plate; iron furniture of proper form for the model; sling swivels; later steel rammer. Overall lg. 60 in. Condition: Metal toned to brown; butt stock with carved cheek rest on the left side; lock functions properly. Footnotes: Note There were 5,340 Harpers Ferry Model 1795 muskets delivered into military stores in 1815 (Peter A. Schmidt, U.S. Military Flintlock Muskets and Their Bayonets, The Early Years 1790-1815, (Woonsocket, R.I.; Andrew Mowbray Publishers, 2006), Chapter 1, especially p. 117). The 'OHIO' marking on the barrel indicates that the musket was part of the distribution of arms to Ohio likely in the 1820s or 1830s according to provisions of the Militia Act of 1808 (Peter A.
