Samuel Burnham Saber, New England, third quarter of the 18th century. Brass hilt with pointed counter-guard and two scrolling branches connecting to a tapering knuckle bow and connecting to a tall ovoid pommel, with spiral carved hard wood grip; straight double-edge blade with single wide fuller. blade lg. 31 5/8, overall lg. 37 1/4 in. Condition: Hilt toned to deep brown/green, the upper branch has an old, repaired split, grip has a long shrinkage crack on the bottom side; blade is toned to deep brown and has overall light to moderate pitting especially toward the tip. Literature The sword is illustrated and described in Merrill Lindsay, The New England Gun The First Two Hundred Years, (New Haven: The New Haven Colony Historical Society, 1975), pp. 55-56. Note According to Linday, Samuel Burnham served with Robert Rogers at the St. Francis Raid in 1759, was later a member of the Sons of Liberty, fought at Bunker Hill, marched with Benedict Arnold to Quebec, fought in the Battles of Saratoga and died in 1782.
