Elaborately Carved Hudson Valley Fowler, c. 1760. 60 3/4 in., .75 caliber octagon to round barrel, the breech with Spanish-style proof markings, top flat extending approx. three-quarters of the distance to the brass blade front sight, British trade lock with no pan bridle, double line border engraving and pointed tail, marked 'FARMER below the pan; tiger maple stock with large butt and thick wrist, raised foliate carving around the lock mortice and side plate plateau, elaborate relief carving around the trigger guard terminating in broad leaves and conforming carving around the breech plug tang and entry pipe, double line carving along the barrel and rammer channels; brass furniture including a trigger guard with pointed finials and reeded square back bow, butt plate point-and-lobe tang, thumb piece with scrolling border, openwork foliate scroll side plate, three sheet brass rammer pipes and a sheet brass entry pipe; wood rammer. Overall lg. 77 3/8 in. Condition: Barrel and lock toned to deep brown with fine underlying pitting; stock has narrow strip of loss along both sides of the barrel channel, fore stock spliced just behind the third rammer pipe; brass toned to deep yellow.
