A large 'terracotta' creamware jug, circa 1805-15 Printed in black on an attractive orange ground, a half-length portrait of Admiral Nelson signed 'T Baddeley Hanley' with a patriotic verse commemorating Trafalgar below, the reverse with a fine British ship in full sail, a smaller vignette below the spout depicting a shepherd in a landscape, the rim, spout and handle picked out in black enamel, 21cm high Footnotes: Thomas Baddeley of Hanley is recorded as an engraver of 'valuable copper plates, for black printing' in a directory of 1800. The same printed portrait of Nelson is on a creamware jug in the National Maritime Museum at Greenwich, inv. no. AAA4400, the inscription commemorating the Battle of the Nile rather than Trafalgar. Elaborate prints were adapted to commemorate different victories, being much less costly than starting from scratch. The printed inscription under his portrait presents Nelson in almost messianic terms and reads: 'Tis NELSON'S Form his Country's latest Pride, Who born to save her, crown'd his Work - and died!
