He befriended King Edward VII, Herbert Asquith and Winston Churchill. His philanthropic activities included education, hospitals and the donations to the British Red Cross. In 1911 he built and endowed an Anglo-German Institute in memory of King Edward VII. Cassel owned many properties and an extensive art collection which was inherited by Cassel's two granddaughters, Lady Delamere and Edwina Mountbatten. The present lot was inherited by Lady Delamere. The paleness and hollowing of the stone, the low relief decoration and the garnet inserted in the finial are all strong signs of Mughal inspiration on the Chinese artisans who crafted the shape and decoration of this beautiful vase. It has been established that Mughal and Mughal-style jades were one of the great passions of the Qianlong Emperor. During his long reign he was an ardent patron and collector, building up an unrivalled collection of antique and contemporary works in this much revered material. Qianlong greatly admired archaic Chinese jades, but the contemporary jades for which he reserved his greatest praise were not in traditional Chinese style, but those he termed 'Hindustan' jades. The Qianlong Emperor was so entranced by these 'Mughal' jades that he commissioned lapidaries working for the Chinese court to make jade items in Mughal style. From as early as 1764, jade carvers were ordered specifically by Qianlong to make exact copies of these foreign jades, or to produce Chinese objects in Mughal style, as in the case of the present vase which encompasses both Mughal and Chinese design elements. For a vase with related incised patterns, see Christie's Hong Kong, 30 Oct 2001, lot 712.
