Rick Griffin (American, 1944-1991): Surfer Magazine Artwork And Original Magazine, 1971, comprising two black line film print overlays for a double-page spread in Surfer magazine, December 1971, entitled Maui Noka Oe 'Maui Is Best!', together with the original magazine issue, framed, 25in x 21in (63.5cm x 53.3cm) (3) Footnotes: Provenance: Ida Griffin, Acquired by the vendor from the Rick Griffin Estate, Peter Golding: Inspirational Times Collection. Rick's family moved to the Palos Verdes Peninsula in 1958 and Rick was introduced to surfing and its lifestyle, which he embraced. Inspired by the cartoons in Mad magazine, his earliest professional work was drawing cartoons on the walls of the Greg Noll Surf Shop, Hermosa Beach. In the summer of 1960 he met John Severson, owner of the bi-monthly Surfer magazine, following which Rick's work was featured in the March 1961 issue. After becoming a regular contributor and then a staff artist, he took a permanent job on the magazine and subsequently created the iconic cartoon character of 'Murphy'. In October 1961 Rick was involved in a car accident, with injuries to his shoulder and face. This damage resulted in him wearing a pirate-style patch over his left eye and incorporated himself as a character into the magazine's 'Griffin & Stoner Adventures'. A few years later, he became influenced by the counter-culture that was burgeoning in California and he emerged as a leading proponent of the psychedelic art that it spawned, much admired by his peers then and since. In 1991, aged just 47, he died following a motorcycle accident near Santa Rosa, California.
