Rick Griffin (American, 1944-1991): Pow-Wow, A Gathering Of The Tribes, Human Be-In, 14th January 1967, black line artwork film print overlay, Rick's first 'Rock' poster for the iconic 'happening' in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park Polo Grounds, mounted and framed, image 20in x 14in (51cm x 35.5cm), overall 27in x 21in (68.5cm x 53.3cm) Footnotes: Provenance: Ida Griffin, Acquired by the vendor from the Rick Griffin Estate, Peter Golding: Inspirational Times Collection. Griffin is widely regarded as the greatest of the 1960s' West Coast psychedelic poster artists. Born in Los Angeles in 1944, he showed an early interest in drawing and comic book art and around the age of 14 became a keen surfer. These interests led him to develop cartoons for Surfer magazine and creating the legendary comic-strip character 'Murphy'. Increasingly involved in the emerging counter-culture, he moved to San Francisco in 1966 and, influenced by artists such as Alton Kelley and Stanley Mouse, began producing posters. This brought commissions from main promoters such as Family Dog and Bill Graham. Rick was a major contributor to Zap Comix and became closely associated with the Grateful Dead, designing posters and album covers for the band. In late 1970 he became a Christian and this informed much of his work over the next two decades. His work is characterised by outstanding draughtsmanship and imagination and he has been cited as an inspiration by his peers. In 1991, aged just 47, he died following a motorcycle accident near Santa Rosa, California. This Human Be-In is arguably the event that heralded the so-called Summer of Love later that year and firmly established the counter-culture in the West Coast of the US. Several leading figures of the movement appeared, including hippie 'spokesman' Timothy Leary, poets Allen Ginsberg and Lawrence Ferlinghetti and political activist Jerry Rubin. A number of the bands that were to define the era also featured, notably the Grateful Dead, Quicksilver Messenger Service and Big Brother and The Holding Company with Janis Joplin.
