AN EARLY SCOTTISH BASKET HILT BROADSWORD, second half of the 17th century. The hilt with interconnecting branches extending up to slots in the low domed pommel with brass capstan, later ray skin covered grip with twisted brass wire wrapping; straight double-edge blade with single wide fuller marked 'HEINRICH/HOPPE 1633' and 'MEFECIT/SOLINGEN' with an orb and cross mark and chiseled running fox mark. Blade lg. 40 3/4, overall lg. 46 1/8 in. Condition: Hilt toned to gray and with overall pitting, grip is a later replacement/restoration; blade has a cleaned mottled gray surface with areas of pitting.
